Federal Perspectives on the Future of Addiction Care and Opportunities for Science to Advance Service Delivery<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Senior leaders from three federal agencies will discuss current and anticipated challenges and relevant opportunities for science to inform and improve addiction care service delivery. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration provides funding for the continuum of services related to addiction care across the United States. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse are major research funders for addiction health services research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emerging Substances in the Illicit Drug Supply: Assessing the Fentanyl-Xylazine Threat<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Adulterants in illicit drugs are ubiquitous and of variable significance. Xylazine, a veterinary sedative, has been increasingly detected in illicit opioids and has been associated with substantial medical complications. The pharmacology, epidemiology, and pathophysiology of fentanyl-xylazine admixtures will be described. Exposure prevention and overdose mitigation utilizing harm reduction, drug checking and biosurveillance data will be highlighted to inform the public health response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addiction Science Enters the Public Policy Arena<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although implementation science prioritizes translating research insights into clinical practice, it can also bring evidence into the formation of policies regarding alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs, and addiction. This presentation reviews examples of efforts to bring addiction-focused science to public policy, and draws general conclusions about the motives, strategies, and mindset that facilitate success. The presentation concludes with a summary of key areas where the contribution of science to public policy is particularly needed right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
