The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration provides funding for the continuum of services related to addiction care across the United States. Xylazine, a veterinary sedative, has been increasingly detected in illicit opioids and has been associated with substantial medical complications. The pharmacology, epidemiology, and pathophysiology of fentanyl-xylazine admixtures will be described. This presentation reviews examples of efforts to bring addiction-focused science to public policy, and draws general conclusions about the motives, strategies, and mindset that facilitate success.
